Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen

Funeral services for Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen age 91 of Blair will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Burial following services in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00PM at the funeral home. Rachel died November 21, 2014 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Rachel N. (Nelson) Hansen Sorensen was born on the family farm 7 miles north of Fremont NE on a very cold morning December 12, 1922. She was baptized January 1923 and confirmed May 1937 at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran in Fremont. Rachel attended Larson Grade School and graduated from Hooper High School in 1940. Rachel married Martin P. Hansen on April 29, 1942 at Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church.
During Rachel's lifetime she was a nanny and church secretary. She enjoyed outdoor activities, sewing, and homemaking. She taught Sunday school for 12 years, was active in church women, Love Days, and volunteer work at the Good Shepherd Home and the Blair Hospital Auxiliary. She lived most of her adult life in the Pleasant View School district where she was also a long time member of the Bench Club. Rachel moved to Good Shepherd Assisted living in April of 2006 and then moved to Good Shepherd Home in September of 2014,
Martin passed away on December 9, 1986. Rachel moved into Blair February 1987. She married Carl Sorensen June 3, 1989 at First Lutheran Church, Blair. They enjoyed 12 years together traveling, visiting relatives, and playing cards before Carl passed away in April of 2001.
Rachel was the mother of four children: daughter Marcia Golden of Blair, daughter Joan Schroeder and husband Doyle of Talmage NE, son Rodney and wife Patricia of Blair, son Douglas and wife Shari of Omaha, 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren.
When Rachel and Carl were married, her family grew to include 3 step children: son Steve Sorensen and wife Bruce of Blair, daughter Kris Schneider and husband Ron of Wichita, Kansas, and Joi Sorensen and friend Earney Newton of Omaha, 4 step grandchildren, and 7 step great grandchildren.
Rachel's favorite Bible verse Romans 8:28 was her baptism, confirmation, and wedding verse.
Rachel was preceded in death by husbands Martin and Carl and a sister Evelyn Mason. She was the last of the sisters and brothers of her husband Martin's family and her own.
