Lt. Col. Frederick Joseph Wittlinger age 92 of Blair, passed away, peacefully, on December 7, 2013, the 72ndanniversary of Pearl Harbor, at Carter House in Blair. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday December 11 at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Visitation will be held Tuesday December 10 at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair beginning at 2:00PM until 8:00PM, with a vigil service at 7:00PM. Burial with full military honors will be held at the Blair Cemetery following mass. Frederick Joseph Wittlinger was born on November 10, 1921 in New York City to Anna M. and Frederick C. Wittlinger. He joined the Army Corp of Engineers on January 23, 1939 as a private and rose to the rank of Lt. Col. In 1963. Wartime service included 1943-45 WWII European Theatre, Battle of the Bulge. Also Korea 1950-51 and Vietnam 1965-66. He retired from military service in August of 1968. He was employed by Gibbs &Hill Inc. Engineers 1961-81, including Project Engineer of the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant. He met Peggy Rounds, 2nd Lt, Army Nurse Corps on Victory in Europe Day, May 8, 1945; they were married in Sissonne, France June 13, 1945. He and Peggy adopted 2 daughters, Joyce and Janet in March 1952 in Fort Belvior, VA. The family travelled extensively as part of his military service. Fred received his education at St Anne’s Academy and Manhattan College, New York city, The University of Maryland, Texas A&M and Command and General Staff College. His military decorations include two Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and numerous campaign medals. During his lifetime, Fred enjoyed woodworking, golf, reading, cars, yard work, entertaining and Husker football. Fred is preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Frederick, wife Peggy, sister Jinny, brothers Donald, Raymond and Bernard. Fred is survived by brother Brendan of Alexandria, VA, daughter Joyce and husband Jerry Robbins of Grand Junction, CO, daughter Janet and husband Chuck Caul of Blair, NE, 6 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to Gentiva Hospice, 847 East 23rd Street Fremont, NE 68025-2444.
